Maine Maritime Academy’s annual Memorial Rededication Ceremony will be held on Friday, October 11, 2024, at 4:30 p.m. The memorial plaza, located behind the Alfond Student Center, includes a ship’s naval gun and a granite monument with a plaque listing MMA alumni lost at sea, gifted by the Classes of 1949 and 1962. This year’s event will be carried out by the Regiment of Midshipmen and focused on those alumni who lost their lives while serving at sea.

As part of the ceremony, members of the Regiment of Midshipmen of the Class of 2028 will be charged by the Commandant, Captain John Cashman, with carrying on the tradition of annual recognition and with ensuring the continued respect of the memorial as hallowed ground.

The 50-caliber gun was used to train midshipmen for World War II and has resided on campus ever since. The naval gun is a tangible symbol of why MMA was founded and a reminder that the Merchant Marine is subject to mobilization to augment the active-duty force in time of war.
