MMA Parents Association

The Maine Maritime Academy Parents Association is made up of parents, family and friends of MMA students interested in helping the school provide the best possible education and experience. Most of us have students who presently attend MMA or who have recently graduated. We act as a support network and as an information resource for you.

Goals of the MMAPA are to:

  • Serve as a liaison between parents and the Academy
  • Be a focal point for dissemination of information to parents & families
  • Actively support Academy programs and activities
  • Provide a parents support network

The ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life for students at Maine Maritime and provide a communication link for parents and families.

The MMAPA directly communicates with families through 2 mailings per year.  These mailings are about are our two fundraising projects each year; the Tuition Raffle in the fall semester and the Spring Raffle in the spring semester.  All other communication is through our Facebook page (linked on the right).  The Facebook page is an opportunity to ask questions, share ideas, make connections for ridesharing (or other needs) or just feel connected to other parents.  We encourage you to like the page and start getting connected with others.

There is no official “membership” to be a part of the MMAPA.  Any person who has a vested interested in the success of students at MMA is welcome to like our Facebook page.

Participation in the raffles provides a direct benefit of our students.  Since 2014 we have contributed to the annual student life awards banquet, graduation gifts to the students who have come the farthest, beverages for ship departure, purchased a pool table and air-hockey table for the new and improved student bilge, provided candy to students at ship jump, gave away over $10,000 from the tuition raffle (each year, for the last four years) to help students pay their tuition, provided gift card give-aways during finals week, purchased Go-Pro cameras for the training ship and the Bowdoin as well as many other contributions to make life aboard the TSSOM and the Bowdoin more fun (games, sports equipment, movies).

Our newest project is a $25,000 ENDOWED scholarship!  With the help and generous donations and raffle purchases by parents, families, friends, and businesses, we met our goal this year.  At the February Board of Trustee’s meeting, the scholarship was officially approved!  We hope, with your help, to continue to grow that scholarship.
