Annual giving is critical to ensuring that students from all backgrounds are able to attend MMA and that we can continue to attract applicants of the highest academic caliber.

Unrestricted gifts to MMA’s Annual Campaign benefit all of our students with direct impact on the cost of tuition as state and federal support of maritime academies diminishes. Unrestricted dollars are applied to the area of greatest need each year, helping to maintain the quality of MMA’s infrastructure and our ability to keep the Training Ship State of Maine and the Schooner Bowdoin sailing proudly.

Gifts restricted to Annual “Pass-through” Scholarships are distributed as needed to recruit and retain MMA students and are an important component of the financial aid packages our Admissions officers have to work with.

All gifts to the Annual Campaign provide the capacity needed to train future leaders for ever-evolving challenges to supply chain logistics, power grid maintenance and management, transportation, and international commerce.

One type of college ranking that is becoming increasingly influential, particularly to outside funders, is alumni giving.  This expression of the value of an MMA education is further highlighted by recent “Best Colleges” and “Best Return on Investment” rankings as reported by US News and World ReportThe Washington Post, and Money.

Annual Campaign gifts go towards MMA’s primary needs in three categories: students, academics, and our campus.

The Annual Campaign provides unrestricted, discretionary funds that enable MMA to respond to immediate needs, new opportunities, and fresh ideas. In fiscal year 2020, a net of $940,785 was raised through the Annual Campaign.

Gifts to the Annual Campaign increase financial aid in two ways. First, donors can restrict their contributions to “pass-through scholarships,” and have an immediate impact on students with financial need. Second, gifts to the Annual Campaign help to reduce the cost of operating the college and therefore increase the amount the college has available to award for financial aid.
Without private philanthropic support to the Annual Campaign, tuition would have to increase to cover the expense of operating and maintaining our campus and waterfront. Unrestricted gifts to the Annual Campaign benefit every student, reducing tuition by more than $400 each year, and a variety of “pass-through” scholarships contribute to tuition reduction packages for many students each year, augmenting the annual distributions from MMA Endowed Scholarships.
Gifts to the endowment and capital projects are not counted toward the Annual Campaign, and certain restrictions are also placed on revenues from event-related fundraising. The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) is the leading source for best practices in educational fundraising, and MMA follows their reporting standards and management guidelines for annual fundraising and campaigns.

An easy way to avoid capital gains taxes while receiving the full market value of your contribution for income tax purposes is through gifts of stock.

  • Check with your employer’s Human Resources Office to determine if your company participates in a matching gift program.
  • Maine Maritime Academy also accepts gifts of real estate and yachts.
  • MMA employees can contribute through payroll deductions.
  • Donors who wish to make a bequest through their will or other estate planning gifts are eligible for membership in The Legacy Society.

However you choose to participate, please know that your gifts are deeply appreciated and we will steward them with care.

Thank you for supporting Maine Maritime Academy!
