MMA Remembrance of Lance Burton
Members of the NTSB were on campus talking with students this week. During their visit, they joined classes and led a lecture for the Regiment of Midshipmen.
2024 Regimental Change of Command Ceremony
This week, students had the opportunity to learn directly from two visiting members of the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB). Bart Barnum, a 2006 Marine Engineering Technology graduate of MMA, and Drew Ehlers, both of whom are investigators of major marine accidents, joined several ...classes during the day and culminated their visit with a lecture to the Regiment of Midshipmen.
As part of their coursework in Casualty Analysis and Workboat Operations at MMA, students delve into the history of the NTSB, its pivotal role, and how its investigative recommendations shape maritime regulations.
Throughout these courses and several others, significant emphasis is placed on pinpointing the root causes of marine casualties to prevent recurrence. This analysis considers Navigation Rules, applicable statutes and regulations, local customs, and the standards of good seamanship.
