Welcome aboard, Midshipmen Under Guidance (MUGs)!
Over the next few months, via this page, we will provide you with information and next steps. Our hope is to help understand what to expect when you become part of the MMA family and to help you succeed once you arrive. In the future, you can again refer to this page for information to help you transition beyond MUG month and into the Academic Year.
One of the first opportunities you will have to meet your future shipmates and get fitted for your Regimental uniforms will be at New Student Orientation (NSO). Attending an in-person NSO is not mandatory, but it will give you an inside look at the campus, familiarize you with some of our vessels, and allow you to have your questions answered. In addition to the in-person experience, this year’s NSO experience will contain virtual offerings to help you prepare for your time at MMA. For more information, explore the New Student Information webpage.
Important information about timelines, academic preparation, and our sponsor family program is included below. We also have links for specific student groups, and they should be able to answer any questions you may have if you fall into these categories. On the New Student Information page, you will find additional links for the uniform fitting form, a physical training calendar with suggested exercises, and other pertinent information needed before your arrival on August 18.
We look forward to working with you as you begin to chart your path here at MMA!

All athletes are welcome to join the regiment, whether your major requires it or you decide to participate voluntarily. We will work with your coaches, especially during the fall semester, to ensure that you can balance your academic, regimental, and athletic responsibilities during RPT and MUG month. Typically, athletes are placed in regimental companies strategically so that teammates remain together. It is important to know that our student-athletes can succeed on the field, on the court, and out on the water! Some even add NROTC, SSMP, Guard, or AUP as well.
Regimental Student Veterans are an incredible asset to the Maine Maritime Academy family.
We will provide on-campus housing for our veteran students during RPT but most move into off-campus housing after Ship Jump. During MUG month MUG requirements are adapted to fit our veterans’ schedules, and upper-class privileges are awarded. We suggest that participating Veterans reach out early so that we can work with you to develop a clear path to success. MMA has an active Student Veterans Association and an SVA lounge where you will find camaraderie across the different service branches at MMA. We encourage all student veterans to submit their Joint Service Transcript as soon as possible so that our registrar can award transfer credit and establish eligibility for the CLEP credit.
Non-traditional students are those that are over 24 years of age. While MMA’s non-traditional population is diverse, it often includes veteran students. ‘Non-trads’ are required to stay on campus during RPT, but they are provided privileges of upper-class students and can move off-campus following Ship Jump. Typically, 10-15 % of our students are non-trads and come from various backgrounds. For non-traditional students who have attained other post-secondary institutions, we encourage you to submit your transcript(s) early so our registrar can award transfer credit.
For students who are interested in service, MMA can provide pathways to every branch. Some students come to MMA with a Navy or Marine Corps 4-year scholarship; some participate in the unit and compete for a 3- or 2- year sideload scholarship. There are also opportunities for unlimited license students to join the SSMP and Commission into the Navy Reserves.
There are also three options for those considering the Coast Guard, including our new AUP unit. AUP is open to ALL majors at MMA and will help provide summer internships and sea time, depending on your major. Alternatively, many students join the Maine Guard and the Maine Air Guard. The Guard is open to all students in all majors. Those who live out of state and join the Guard are provided in-state tuition, and the Guard benefits provide a tuition waiver.
