It was an early start for the new 8 training crew on board today. We were up at 0500 to get the ship underway for the 39 ship parade of sail for Quebec City.
As the first day of our CR 313 cruise there is a lot to do to get our new crew ready to sail the ship to Newfoundland. The CR 313 cruises are an important aspect of the Vessel Operations and Technology Majors preparations for their final year of academic course work. The CR 313 cruise focuses on watch standing, passage planning, and celestial navigation competencies that the students are required to complete before they can receive their USCG licenses.
Our first day of training was focused on ships safety equipment, emergency responses, emergency drills, sail handling, and an overview of route planning and weather routing for the upcoming passage to Cornerbrook, Newfoundland.
The crew is excited as we make our way out of the St Lawrence Seaway. We are flying along at up to 10 knots with the out going current! Newfoundland here we come!
