Arrival in the Bay Islands

Posted on: July 28, 2017

Our arrival in the Bay of Islands brought rest for the ship and the crew, but not for long. We are here for training and sailing so that is what today was all about. The day began with a field day to clean the ship, and get everything shipshape for our arrival in Corner Brook. Then the next order of business was to give our CR 313 students time to catch up on the cruise logs and work through many of the celestial observations that they have been taking. The midships area was a flurry of nautical almanacs and sight reduction tables as the students recalled their C-Nav courses taken back in Castine. After 2 hours the students were still hard at work, but there was sailing to do today and more training on emergency responses and vessel operations.

We set the ships storm Tri-sail for training and sailed off the anchor adding the foresail and stays’l as we went. We had a great sail across the bay of islands practicing Man Over Board recovery under sail.

As we approached our anchorage for the night Captain Eley saw Moose on the beach! As we moved in closer we realized that the moose were actually 5 brown cows grazing among the small fishing camps. The crew anchored the vessel and took an excursion ashore to investigate and do a little hiking.
