It is a great honor for Bowdoin and Maine Maritime Academy to be part of this excellent gathering of ships in Quebec city. The gathering of 39 sailtraining ships of this kind has not been seen in North America for over 30 years with Quebec City and Canada pulling out all the stops to make for an excellent event. The Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, officially kicked off the event yesterday, and the Quebec City waterfront is hosting record numbers of people coming out to see the ships.
Even among such a distinguished fleet of sailing ships, Bowdoin stands out from the crowd. As one of 7 wooden ships at the event, Bowdoin’s long history brings her to the forefront among the vessels. The recent work done to refurbish the deck, top-timbers, and topsides have triggered many comments on how well the ship looks, and how she stands out as a well-maintained ship within the fleet.
The efforts of the crew to make the ship stand out were so well recognized that Bowdoin won the award for “Best Crew” among the RDV 2017 fleet in Quebec City. An amazing accomplishment and a great honor for the ship and her most excellent crew.
