Bio

Captain Chris Torrey, Associate Professor of Marine Transportation, joined the Maine Maritime Academy faculty in 2021 after returning to the Academy in 2015 as Third Mate aboard the T.S. State of Maine. His current teaching assignments include Ship’s Business and Electronic Navigation II (ECDIS), as well as Ship Structure and the elective Offshore Technology I. He also regularly sails aboard the T.S. State of Maine as an Assistant Training Officer during the Academy’s summer training cruises and serves as the Marine Transportation Department representative to the Academic Program Review Committee.

A native of Blue Hill, Maine, just a few miles from Maine Maritime Academy, Capt. Torrey spent much of his formative years on the water, lobstering and “messing about” in boats. He graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 2003 with dual Bachelor of Science degrees in Marine Transportation and Power Engineering Technology.

Following graduation, Capt. Torrey sailed as a Third Mate aboard chemical tankers before transitioning to the offshore oil and gas industry. He spent nearly a decade aboard dynamically positioned drillships, progressing from Assistant Dynamic Positioning Operator through Dynamic Positioning Operator and Senior Dynamic Positioning Operator before ultimately serving as Chief Mate. His offshore career provided extensive experience in navigation, dynamic positioning, vessel operations, emergency response, and the management of complex shipboard operations in support of deepwater drilling.

Capt. Torrey holds a U.S. Coast Guard credential as Master, Steam or Motor Vessels, Unlimited Tonnage, Upon Oceans. He also earned a Master of Science in Maritime Management from Maine Maritime Academy and has passed the U.S. Customs Broker License Examination, complementing his maritime background with an interest in customs, international trade, and import compliance.

Drawing on his commercial sailing, offshore, and training ship experience, Capt. Torrey emphasizes the practical application of classroom concepts and preparing students for the operational, managerial, and regulatory responsibilities they will encounter as professional mariners.
