Today, the TRAINING SHIP STATE OF MAINE is making its way north toward Canada under clear skies and calm seas. As we continue our voyage, deck students are spending their evenings topside taking celestial observations, an essential component of Summer Sea Term training that connects today’s mariners with centuries of navigational tradition.
Excitement is building across the ship as we prepare to visit a new country and explore a new port of call.
Today also marks a major milestone for our first-year students—the halfway point of Summer Sea Term. At Maine Maritime Academy, all freshmen spend equal time learning both deck and engine operations, regardless of their eventual major. This hands-on approach provides every student with a broader understanding of vessel operations and the teamwork required to run a ship at sea safely.
With the midpoint reached, the 4/C students who have been training in the engine department will move up to deck, while those who have been training on deck will head below to the engine room. The transition offers a new perspective on life and work aboard ship and continues the Academy’s commitment to developing well-rounded maritime professionals.
