Evening Captain’s Report
Good evening from the Bowdoin,
Underway for Nova Scotia! The crew has been waiting anxiously for weather and time to line up to make the crossing to Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. This will be a 290nm voyage that will take Bowdoin from the Gulf of Maine, across the Bay of Fundy and around Cape Sable the southern tip of Nova Scotia. We departed Potts Harbor, Harpswell, Maine at around 1130 and swung the bow south to get some “southing” in before the wind backs to the SE. The idea being as the wind increases later in the night from the SE we have a better sailing angle to fall off towards NS, and stay clear of the Bay of Fundy and its strong currents. The current here can slow progress and the sea state can turn into a washing machine quickly. So off we go and the crew can now settle into the rhythm of regular watches and routine for the next 2.5 days. It’s a good first day to get offshore as the sea state is calm with only a long SE rolling swell about 2-3 ft. We will get into 4-6 closer to NS and it’s better to acclimate slowly for those who might get a bit green in the gills.
P.S. We saw a blue tip shark not 10’ from the boat! Must have been 20 feet long!
Sincerely,
Capt. Peacock
