  • Rachel Borisko and Brendan Kerivan awarded Quahog Bay scholarship

    Rachel Borisko and Brendan Kerivan were awarded scholarships from the Quahog Bay Conservancy, a nonprofit based in Harpswell, ME. The scholarships are in support of their senior research projects. Every Ocean Studies major is required to take a two-semester sequence of classes where they develop and execute an independent research project. Read More…

  • Maggie MacMahon receives Sea Grant award

    MMA Ocean Studies student Maggie MacMahon recently received a Maine Sea Grant Undergraduate Scholarship in Marine Science for the 2018-2019 academic year. The award, given by the Maine Sea Grant College Program at the University of Maine, both financially supports exemplary students in marine science and engages them in a statewide cohort of Sea Grant-supported students. Congrats, Maggie!

    MMA Ocean Studies graduate Cristin Wright accepted to the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS)

    Cristin Wright, a 2017 graduate of the Marine Science/SVO program at MMA, was recently accepted to the School of Marine Science graduate program at VIMS. Cristin spent the summer of 2016 working at VIMS where she developed an interest in marine sediment and geological processes.Read More…

    Krisy Kelley (’15, Marine Bio) was recently accepted to the School of Veterinary Medicine at St. George’s University in Grenada.   • Associate Professor Jessica Muhlin shares her love of seaweeds

    Dr. Jessica Muhlin presented “Sensational Seaweeds” on Friday, Nov. 3, at the Witherle Library in Castine. Her talk explored the natural history as well as the uses of marine macroalgae, both historically and currently, and included a sampling of some foods containing seaweed and cookbooks encouraging the use of seaweed in cooking.Read More…

  • Research investigating microplastics and toxic compounds in Penobscot Bay mentioned in the Working Waterfront

    Huxley Conner (Marine Science/SVO, ’18) and Assistant Professor Carey Friedman have been sampling Penobscot Bay for microplastics and toxic compounds including flame retardants and compounds released when wood and other organic material is burned.Read More…
