Just over 100 years ago, a plan was hatched to explore the Arctic to further scientific knowledge and demonstrate American maritime capabilities.  Under the direction of Captain Donald B. MacMillan, the schooner Bowdoin was built in East Boothbay, Maine, at the Hodgdon Brothers Shipyard in 1921. With 88 feet overall, a 21-foot beam, and displacement of 66 tons, Bowdoin is the only American schooner built specifically for Arctic exploration. Bowdoin also carries the distinction of official sailing vessel of the State of Maine, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, and is certified by the US Coast Guard as both a passenger and sail training vessel.

In recognition of Bowdoin’s centennial and in furtherance of maritime exploration and research, Maine Maritime Academy, owner of the Bowdoin since 1988, is planning three educational voyages back to the Arctic during the next decade. Our plan envisions a voyage every three years that traces the historic expeditions of Captain MacMillan.  The embarked students will conduct science experiments, practice celestial navigation, collect marine and terrestrial data, and demonstrate seamanship – much like Captain MacMillan and crew during their 18 Arctic voyages between 1921 and 1954.

A documentary film maker will join us for portions of the voyage to chronicle the journey. The film will be sent to media outlets and made available via social media and the MMA website.  As a project benefactor, you will help kickstart the next decade of an enhanced maritime experience for Maine Maritime Academy students.

Objective:

$1 million to fund three student voyages to the Arctic aboard the schooner Bowdoin over the next decade.
