2016 Schooner Bowdoin

We’re off

Posted on: July 30, 2016

Dear Friends,

Bowdoin has left the dock once again for another round of adventure! The first CR 313 trip has begun for the summer of 2016. We set sail off the shores of Maine Maritime Academy this morning. Although this is not a new trip for Bowdoin to be going on, it is a new trip for us on board. This being my first endeavor as Captain, myself and the whole crew were excited to get out and catch some wind.

Starting off the trip, we conducted some safety drills and orientation. Most of the students have never been aboard for more than a moment in their time, so it’s a wonderful experience to see them all catch a glimpse of the history. Our first port of call was in Blue Hill, Maine where Captain Eley and Hannah Gray gave a presentation about Bowdoin and her history, as well as showing off some pictures of the rebuild that had happened this past year.

Now anchored a little ways from the Yacht Club, we will be setting sail in the morning and heading off towards our offshore leg to Nova Scotia. We are all so excited to get the wind behind us and make our way towards Bowdoin’s home waters up north, where she has lived and explored her entire life.

Until then we are split into anchor watches tonight, and are getting some sleep before diving into some celestial navigation in the days coming. Keep us in your minds as we bring Bowdoin to get some friendly waters onto her new and beautiful deck.

Capt. Hathaway
