Today was an exciting day for Bowdoin and her crew as we officially departed for the underway portion of our program. Bowdoin slipped her lines from the waterfront boat basin at 1330. Friends, loved ones, and coworkers gathered to see the crew off.
Once clear of the dock, the crew promptly began setting sail—starting with the mainsail, followed by the crisp 12-by-18-foot Star-Spangled Banner, and then the foresail and headsails. It was a pleasant motor-sail down to Resolution Island before we encountered a fresh southwest breeze.
After a dozen or so tacks down the bay to help the crew become well-seasoned in their sail-handling evolutions, we found anchorage in Rockland Harbor.
Our wonderful returning cook, Mary, prepared an excellent chicken dinner with stuffing, mashed potatoes, and green beans.
