The crew came on deck to a beautiful summer day in Rockland Harbor. After a hearty breakfast of scrambled eggs and sausage, we got to work on several deck projects.

Throughout the morning, a few local windjammers returned from their Downeast adventures, and a seaplane buzzed close by, both capturing the crew’s attention.

After wrapping up the day’s work and enjoying a taco lunch, we began preparing to get underway. Today’s challenge was sailing off the anchor without using the engine. While this is a common maneuver, it was a first for this crew and required precise coordination to ensure the vessel gathered way in the correct direction as the anchor came free.

The evolution went off without a hitch, and we enjoyed a fantastic afternoon sail south past Owls Head and out into Penobscot Bay.

By evening, we had anchored in Tenants Harbor, a quiet refuge populated primarily by lobster boats. The harbor offers excellent protection from the southwest and an easy approach from sea. The crew did an outstanding job bringing the schooner to rest at anchor under sail in tight quarters.

Dinner followed, along with the assignment of anchor watches to ensure a sound night’s sleep before the early 0400 turn-to.
