2021 Summer Training Cruise A

Day 6: Overnight Transit

Students in Alpha company washing the anchor chain as we heaved in

Yesterday morning, the ship left Searsport anchorage and headed to sea. Overnight, we were able to head south to the Portland traffic separation scheme and practice navigating in and out of the lanes. Following this, we went east and then north back into Searsport where we will anchor to wait out a low-pressure system. Both ship’s crew and cadets are working hard to determine the route to take to avoid heavy weather.

Coming in and out of Penobscot bay is very beneficial to the students both on deck and in the engine room. On deck, students are learning all about the ground tackle and how to make sure that the anchor isn’t dragging. In the engine room, they have had many opportunities to startup and shut down the main engine and generators.
