Day two aboard the STATE OF MAINE is already a strong reminder that every successful voyage begins long before the ship leaves the pier. While some students are still settling into routines and shipboard life, others are hard at work ensuring that critical systems are tested, verified, and ready for sea.
Today, Alpha Company took to the deck with a hands-on task that plays a vital role in onboard safety: laying out and testing the ship’s fire hoses. One by one, lengths of hose were stretched across the deck, carefully connected, and secured. Once assembled, the system was pressurized, allowing students to check each section thoroughly for leaks or weaknesses.
It’s meticulous work, but it’s essential. Firefighting readiness is a cornerstone of maritime safety, and ensuring that every hose performs under pressure is not something left to chance. For the students, this evolution is more than just a checklist item—it’s practical training that reinforces attention to detail, teamwork, and accountability.
As the end of the week approaches, preparations like these continue across the vessel. Each system checked and every drill completed brings the crew one step closer to departure. There’s a growing sense of anticipation on board, balanced by the steady rhythm of preparation and training.
By the time the STATE OF MAINE gets underway, it won’t just be the ship that’s ready—the students will be, too.
