2025 Summer Training Cruise

From Engines to Charts: An Unexpected Journey Into Navigation

Posted on: June 3, 2025

So far, the most memorable part of this experience has been standing night watch. There’s something incredibly peaceful and almost surreal about being out on the open ocean after dark. The calm of the water paired with the vastness of the star-filled sky creates a sense of stillness and wonder that’s hard to describe and nearly impossible to find anywhere else.

One night, I had the opportunity to spend time in the navigation room, where I was introduced to the fundamental principles of navigation using charts. Despite being an engineering major, I found myself genuinely intrigued by the process. There’s something rewarding about plotting a course and understanding how every detail—from compass bearings to environmental conditions—contributes to keeping the ship on track. Since then, I’ve started exploring navigation more in my free time, and it’s quickly become a newfound interest.

As the cruise continues, I look forward to each upcoming watch. Every shift brings a chance to see something new, learn from the crew, and deepen my understanding of shipboard life. Whether it’s observing operations on the bridge, helping with maintenance tasks, or simply absorbing the rhythm of life at sea, I want to make the most of every opportunity until we finally return to port in Portland.

This journey has already taught me more than I expected, not just about maritime operations but also about myself, and I’m excited to keep learning.
