Today was one of the first days that a shift in wildlife and the behavior of local species to the south could be seen and caught the attention of many aboard the training ship.

In New England, you most commonly see seagulls trailing the stern, looking for potential meals dropped off the ship or kicked up from the propeller. This scavenging behavior is less common in the warmer waters to the south due to the prevalence of flying fish, which are observed to skim the water when they are moved by the bow of the TSSOM. As such, birds such as Fletchers are seen hunting for these fish off the bow, diving for them as they break the surface of the water.

This has resulted in many close calls with our bow lookouts as they stand right next to where these Fletchers would glide using the jetstream off the bow.

Training continues in all areas of the ship and we are enjoying mostly beautiful weather.
