Regimental Program
The Commandant’s staff are looking forward to the start of the Spring 2021 semester and the anticipated summer cruises. We welcomed our newest Regimental members in October following a very successful Regimental Preparatory Training (RPT).
We expect to continue with morning musters for only the Company on watch during the Spring semester. Commandant’s Time will return on Mondays from 1630 to 1730 which allows for Company meetings, watch organization, and small Regimental planning sessions. Before the end of the Fall 2020 semester, we will be announcing selectees for the 2021 Wedge and Ship-Rates. The formal Change of Command for Regimental Leadership will occur in February.
The bulk of the Regimental program will be focused on preparing all unlimited license students for the summer 2021 cruises. The first cruise will commence immediately after the end of the Spring semester and will focus on students in the classes of 2021 and 2023 who were scheduled to cruise during the summer of 2020. U.S. Coast Guard license examinations will be offered on campus for the seniors immediately after cruise. Students in the class of 2023 will have an opportunity to cadet ship following cruise. A second cruise will occur in early July for the classes of 2022 and 2024. The newly selected Ship-Rates from the class of 2022 will be conducting pre-cruise training for the class of 2024 as soon as we return to campus in January so that they are prepared for their summer cruise. Students in the class of 2022 who did not have an opportunity to cadet ship in the summer of 2020 will have an opportunity to sail on commercial vessels prior to returning to Castine for the second training cruise. Specific cruise dates and pre-cruise reporting dates will be published as soon as they are available. We are hopeful that we will be able to conduct port calls during cruise; however, safety is our top priority thus port visits will only occur if they can be done without risking introduction of the COVID-19 virus aboard the ship. The cruises will visit various port areas and anchorages for navigational training and to give students an opportunity to see significant landmarks and enjoy some down-time with enhanced cellular service.
The first Regimental Formation for the Spring 2021 semester will be on the first Monday of in-person classes. Regimental students are cautioned against missing class, especially at the beginning of the semester, as STCW assessments and practical labs will begin immediately. For residential students, please contact Janice Folk at janice.folk@mma.edu if you have any travel concerns.
