Evening Captain’s Report
Good evening from the Bowdoin.
After another motorboat ride back down the coast from Roque Island, we found ourselves in yet another new place Northeast Harbor, yup, just up and around from Southwest Harbor. After a few phone calls, we were able to tie up for the night and take advantage of showers, laundry, and a much-needed stretch of the legs. It’s a very quaint harbor, and we’re grateful it was available, thanks to it still being early in the season. Soon enough, this place will be booked solid, with a different yacht in nearly every night.
Being here also marked the first time this crew had the opportunity to represent the ship in public, making for a valuable lesson in public relations as they conducted themselves as ambassadors for the Maine Maritime Academy. It’s a great primer for Maine Windjammer Days in Boothbay, where we’ll encounter large crowds and many other schooners.
After a pleasant night alongside, we woke to some moderate fog, which quickly cleared. We settled into our morning routines and took on a few small projects. With one last top-up of water, we set off. A moderate southerly wind began to fill in, and we made good speed around 6 knots as we sailed east and south around the Cranberry Islands. We then turned west, shaping up for the passage between Placentia Island and Black Island.
From there, we continued toward Swan’s Island and sailed a dying evening breeze into beautiful Mackerel Cove. A few curious seals were the only ones cheering us in as we anchored in yet another serene and quiet cove.
Another great day sailing Bowdoin in coastal Maine, topped off with a great dinner of chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and salad! The best part is that there is always room for seconds.
Sincerely,
Capt. Peacock
