Position as of 1600 ET (4:00pm): Anchored off Hog Island, Eastern Penobscot Bay
Weather: Calm, light southeast wind, slight drizzle, and patchy fog
Greetings all,
As of 1300 (1:00 p.m.), Bowdoin cast off her lines in Castine, officially beginning the 2025 sailing season. After a month of hard work and long days preparing the 104-year-old schooner, the crew is finally settling into the rhythm of life aboard.
Today was a busy one, filled with last-minute tasks, gear coming aboard, and a full schedule of safety discussions and drills. After a short motor sail under fore and staysails, we’ve anchored off Hog Island in eastern Penobscot Bay—near the northern approach to Eggemoggin Reach.
Now, as we wait for a dinner of baked haddock, roasted potatoes, and salad, the fog is lifting. The clearing sky reveals a stunning coastal Maine vista just off our starboard side: a sandy beach framed by classic rocky Maine shoreline, with a quiet little house nestled behind it. We’ve even seen a few schooners from the windjammer fleet gracefully pass by.
Sincerely,
Captain Alex Peacock
