Bio

Captain Allison Tunick sailed aboard oceanographic research vessels operated with Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, the University of Washington, Scripps Institution of Oceanography, and the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute, and served as Chief Mate/Relief Captain aboard the oil spill response vessel California Responder, based in the Los Angeles/Long Beach port complex.

Born and raised in Bangor, Maine, Tunick earned a B.A. in Environmental Sciences, summa cum laude, from Connecticut College and studied at St. Petersburg State University in Russia. After college, she returned to Russia on a Thomas J. Watson Fellowship to study communication within the Russian environmental movement. She later worked in international environmental education and technology in New York City before deciding to pursue a maritime career and enrolling at Maine Maritime Academy. She graduated as valedictorian with a B.S. in Marine Transportation Operations.

After her seagoing career, Tunick returned to MMA, first as an adjunct professor and later as a faculty member in Marine Transportation. She teaches navigation, seamanship, and nautical science. She also created and continues to develop Mariner Happiness and Wellbeing, a course that brings research on wellbeing and psychological safety into maritime education. She is particularly interested in the human side of going to sea and how mariners can better prepare for the challenges of living and working aboard ship and contribute to healthy shipboard cultures.
