Annual Fund giving is essential for ensuring that students of varying backgrounds can attend Maine Maritime Academy.

As an institution that values our students and their overall experience at MMA, our focus is on what we call the Five Pillars of MMA: Scholarships, Academics, Athletics, the Presidential Initiative Fund, and Unrestricted (Area of Greatest Need). These Five Pillars help us provide our students with a variety of programs and opportunities to help enrich their overall experience at MMA.

Annual Fund Pillars

Annual (Pass-through) Scholarships are an important component of the financial aid package that provides financial support to incoming and returning students in the next academic year. Learn more about scholarships at Maine Maritime Academy.

The Academic Fund will help fund innovative curriculum and provide support for our faculty of industry leaders to offer continued classroom and hands-on training for students to help meet their career goals.

The Athletic Fund offers support to our athletic department that is a crucial component of many students and their life on campus.

Presidential Initiative Fund is intended for the use of our President to support programs that will benefit the non-academic day-to-day lives of our students.

Unrestricted Fund will be allocated to the area of greatest need, determined at the beginning of each fiscal year. In FY25, the area of greatest need continues to be the Annual Scholarships.

  4. Matching Gift. Check with your employer’s Human Resources Office to determine if your company participates in a matching gift program.
  5. Gifts of real estate and yachts.
  6. MMA employees can contribute through payroll deductions.
  7. Donors who wish to make a bequest through their will or other estate planning gifts are eligible for membership in The Legacy Society
  8. Gifts of stock. An easy way to avoid capital gains taxes while receiving the full market value of your contribution for income tax purposes.

However you choose to participate, please know that your gifts are deeply appreciated and we will steward them with care.

The Annual Fund offers flexible and immediate financial support that addresses pressing needs across MMA.

Donations designated for specific areas will be directed to the intended fund. Unrestricted gifts, on the other hand, are allocated to the area of greatest need, which is determined at the start of each fiscal year.

Gifts to the Annual Fund increase financial aid in two ways. First, donors can restrict their contributions to the Annual “Pass-through” Scholarships, and have an immediate impact on students with financial need. Second, gifts to the Annual Fund help to reduce the cost of operating the college and therefore increase the amount the college has available to award financial aid.

Gifts to the endowment and capital projects are not counted toward the Annual Fund, and certain restrictions are also placed on revenues from event-related fundraising. The Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) is the leading source for best practices in educational fundraising, and MMA follows their reporting standards and management guidelines for annual fundraising and campaigns.
