2022 Summer Training Cruise

June 1 | Exams and a Brief Intermission

Today, Delta Company had a training day. The deck freshmen spent the morning in the classroom learning about cranes, slings, chain falls, fall arrest mechanisms, and the considerations required to safely use them. The engine freshmen had the morning to study for their upcoming flashlight test this afternoon which requires students to walk through an entire system in the engine room with a professor while they check the students’ understanding of how the system operates. This is one of the major grades for their cruise.

This afternoon deck training learned how to use come along  and chain falls to move heavy objects. Using slings, beam clamps, a chain fall, and a come along the group had to move a bucket a few feet. Alpha Company had maintenance today and some of the deck students where chipping paint on the 03-reception deck.

Also today, we were not under command (when the ship has no propulsion or is not able to maneuver) for about half an hour while the engineers fixed a leaky fuel line on the main engine. The main engine was back up and running quite quickly and we were making way around 15:30.
