Day 35: Departing Galveston

Posted on: June 9, 2016

Location: Departing Galveston, TX
Weather: Passing showers         Wind: 8 kts S         Seas: Moderate Swell
Alpha: Training         Bravo: Maintenance         Charlie: Utility          Delta: Watch

Midshipmen and staff alike are glad to be underway again, especially the 2/C, who will finish their cruise in Portsmouth, NH, our next port. Many students are also glad to be heading back north to what will hopefully be slightly cooler and less humid weather, although many are enjoying the warmth of the south. While in Galveston, Maine Maritime midshipmen were shown around by the cadets from Texas A&M, whose campus is located in town. Students were also given a tour of Hornbeck Offshore’s vessel the HOS Achiever by her master, Captain Jon, and the 1st Assistant Engineer Cory, MMA class of ’03. Achiever is a state-of-the-art offshore supply vessel currently fitted out as a floating hotel. Students were thoroughly impressed by the ship, particularly the gym, which has a reputation for being one of the best afloat.
