The TS State of Maine departed Cobh, Ireland this morning, bound for Antwerp, Belgium. During our 4 day stay in Cobh, students enjoyed not only the town of Cobh, but the surrounding countryside, including the city of Cork, Blarney Castle, and the Jameson Distillery. Midshipmen also underwent intense training at the National Maritime College of Ireland, which included experience driving rescue boats to retrieve somebody who had fallen overboard, a damage control drill in a sophisticated simulator, and ocean survival training in a state-of-the-art storm pool. All participants agreed that the training was not only a valuable experience, but a lot of fun as well. All in all, our first international port has been a resounding success, and students eagerly await the opportunity to experience a second.
