Admissions Checklist

Applicants must submit the following items to complete the application process:

☐ Application for Admission

Submit an online application through the Loeb-Sullivan School. For a printed copy for your records, contact the Graduate Enrollment Specialist at graduateprograms@mma.edu or 207-326-2620. There is no application fee for online submissions.

☐ Official Transcripts

Official transcripts must be sent directly from each post-secondary institution attended to Maine Maritime Academy. Transcripts may be sent via mail, email, or through an authorized online transcript service such as Parchment, Credentials Solutions, or The National Student Clearinghouse.

  • If you receive your undergraduate degree from MMA, transcripts will be requested directly from the Registrar’s Office.

☐ Two Letters of Recommendation

Two academic or professional letters of recommendation are required. When you complete the online application, requests are automatically emailed to your selected recommenders.

☐ Resume/Curriculum Vitae

Submit a current resume or CV with your application.

☐ Personal Statement of Interest

Your personal statement should be one to two pages in length and describe your past and current academic and professional experience, your future goals, and your reasons for pursuing graduate study. You may also include any other pertinent information that will help us evaluate you as a candidate.

☐ GRE/GMAT

  • While strong GMAT or GRE scores may enhance an application, as of January 25, 2021, GRE and GMAT scores are not required for applicants who hold degrees from accredited institutions in the United States or Canada.
  • Applicants who have not yet graduated from accredited institutions in the U.S. or Canada must submit GRE or GMAT scores. Test results must be sent directly from the testing agency to Maine Maritime Academy, Loeb-Sullivan School, using institution code 3505.

☐ English Language Proficiency – International Applicants Only

Applicants whose language of instruction was not English must demonstrate proficiency through TOEFL or IELTS. Results must be sent directly to Maine Maritime Academy, Loeb-Sullivan School, using institution code 3505. This requirement is mandatory and cannot be waived.

☐ Non-U.S. Diplomas, Certificates, Licenses, and Transcripts – International Applicants Only

A four-year baccalaureate degree (or equivalent) is generally required. All non-U.S. academic credentials must be evaluated by an approved credentialing service to verify authenticity, grade equivalency, and transfer credits. The following services are recognized:

Admission Categories

Following a review of all required application materials, applicants to the Loeb-Sullivan School Department of Graduate Studies will be notified of one of the following admission decisions:

Accepted

Applicants who demonstrate the academic preparation, professional experience, and motivation necessary for success in graduate study may be granted full admission. Students admitted under this category are eligible to enroll without conditions and are expected to meet all academic standards of the graduate program.

Provisional Admission

Applicants who demonstrate potential for success but do not fully meet standard admission requirements may be considered for provisional admission. Provisional admission is granted at the discretion of the Graduate Admissions Committee and may include specific conditions, such as the successful completion of designated coursework and/or the maintenance of a minimum grade point average during an initial enrollment period. Upon completion of the stated conditions, the student’s status will be reviewed and may result in full admission or further academic action.

Denied

Applicants whose academic preparation, professional experience, or application materials do not demonstrate adequate readiness for graduate-level study will be denied admission. Denied applicants may reapply in a future admission cycle if additional academic coursework or professional experience strengthens their qualifications.

 

Transfer Credit

Candidates for the Master of Science degree in Maritime Management may request the transfer of up to six (6) credit hours of graduate-level coursework toward program requirements.

Candidates seeking to transfer credits earned before matriculation in the Loeb-Sullivan School should obtain approval from the Registrar before enrollment. Once enrolled, candidates must consult with and receive approval from the Registrar before enrolling in any external graduate course intended for transfer credit.

Maine Maritime Academy reserves the right to determine what constitutes acceptable transfer credit. A grade of B or better is required for all transfer coursework.
