The Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor completed Bowdoin’s planking this week! The “whisky plank” was fitted on Thursday. Still, several weeks of work are remaining to complete caulking the plank seams, fair the hull, install thru-hull fittings, clean the vessel, install the rudder and wheel, and paint the bottom. The current plan is to launch the vessel on the high tide on June 18.
Bowdoin will then return to MMA and the crew will get the vessel ready to sail for two training cruises. These annual expeditions are key training components for Vessel Operations and Technology majors (CR-313). During this year’s cruises, Bowdoin and her crew, made up primarily of MMA students, will undertake two 14-day offshore voyages along the coast of Maine and Nova Scotia. We will stop in several ports of call along the way.
We will be sharing news of Bowdoin’s progress throughout the summer on the Training Cruise blog.
