Nutting Memorial Library Research Contest

The purpose of the prize is to recognize excellence in research projects that make creative and extensive use of the Nutting Memorial Library’s collections, including, but not limited to, print resources, databases, primary resources, and materials in all media. The project may take the form of a traditional paper, a video, or other digital project.
Up to two cash prizes of $400 each may be given. If the winning entry is a group project, the prize will be divided equally among all group members.
Prize recipients will be honored at the Research Celebration on April 11th and will be asked to display their project at the event.
Applicants must be a current full-time student at Maine Maritime Academy.
Eligible projects:
- Projects from any level course in all disciplines will be considered.
- Need to have been completed during Academic Year 2016 (August- April).
- Can be submitted by an individual or by a team.
- Can be either an independent research effort or an assignment for a credit class.
- Multimedia/digital projects are also accepted.
- One entry per person.
- Complete the application form and submit it along with your project via email to library@mma.edu by March 31st at midnight.
- If submitting a group project, all members of the group must sign the application form.
- A brief overview of the research process (1-2 paragraphs) must be included on the application.
- Submit a final version of the research project/paper, including your bibliography. This should be a “clean copy,” NOT a graded copy with the professor’s comments (if applicable).
- Include a bibliography or other appropriate listing of sources consulted, if not submitted as a part of your final research project.
Submissions will be evaluated by a panel consisting of two faculty members and two staff, including one librarian.
- Quality of the project: There should be an easily identifiable and developed thesis, evidence of critical thinking, logical arguments, and integrated research.
- Use of library resources: A significant number of relevant works cited and/or references, appropriate to the length of the paper, must be provided as evidence of effective use of library resources.
- Demonstrated knowledge of the subject.
- The completeness and quality of the project, including the brief summary of the research process.
- The application deadline for the 2016 awards is March 31st at midnight.
- Incomplete applications will not be accepted and late applications will not be considered. Applications are submitted digitally and will not be returned.
- Projects that cannot be submitted digitally can be hand delivered to Wendy Girven, Director of Library Services.
