Robert O’Connell ’54
SCARBOROUGH — Robert L. O’Connell, 78, of Scarborough, died on Tuesday, Aug. 7, 2012, at Maine Veterans Home.
He was born in Manchester, N.H., the son of Victor and Emily King O’Connell. He attended local schools and was a 1951 graduate of Cheverus High School. Robert graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in 1954.
Robert served in the Navy for 21 years. After retiring from the Navy, Robert returned to Maine. He worked for L.L. Bean and later for Bass Shoe. He retired in 2000.
Robert was a communicant of St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, a member of the Knights of Columbus former member of the Elks Club.
Robert is survived by his wife, the former Priscilla R. Gamache of Scarborough; five daughters, Janet Pierce and her husband Dr. Daniel of Portland, Elizabeth O’Connell and her husband Stephen Harding of Portland, Mary O’Connell of Montana, Judy Adler and her husband Tim of New Sweden, Jacqueline Sawtelle and her husband Scott of Yarmouth, a son, Robert O’Connell Jr. and his wife Tina of Cumberland; a sister, Janet O’Connell of St. Petersburg, Fla. and Scarborough; his former wife, Sylvia O’Connell of Cumberland; and grandchildren, Ben, Sam, Maddie, Emily and Declan.
Visiting hours will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 9, 2012, at Conroy-Tully Crawford South Portland Chapel, 1024 Broadway, South Portland. Prayers will be recited at 10:15 a.m. on Friday at the South Portland Chapel, followed by an 11 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Maximilian Kolbe Church, 150 Blackpoint Rd., Scarborough. Burial with military rites will be held in the Armed Forces Section of New Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
