Norman E. Brawn ’54
SOUTH PARIS — Norman E. Brawn, 80, of Norway, passed away March 5, at the Maine Veterans’ Home. Norman was born March 3, 1933, to John R. Brawn and Doris (Foster) Brawn. After graduating from Skowhegan High School, Norman attended Maine Maritime Academy. In high school as well as at Maine Maritime, Norman excelled as a musician and athlete, setting records on the Skowhegan High School’s football and track teams.
After Maine Maritime, Norman served in the U.S. Coast Guard and active duty in the Navy until 1956. In 1956, Norman was appointed commanding officer at the Naval Reserve Manpower Center. On Oct. 21, 1966, Lt. j.g. Officer Norman E. Brawn was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy.
During the early years of Naval service, Norman married his high school sweetheart, Jean E. Berry. Not only was Jean the love of Norman’s life, she was his best friend and soul mate. Norman and Jean raised two children, John M. Brawn and Jo-Ellen (Brawn) Carter in Old Town, near where Norman worked as a steam engineer and administrator for Bangor Hydro, until his retirement.
In 1999, Norman’s love passed away. If not for the dear friends the Schreiters, Levesques and Mullens this time would have been more difficult; thank-you to each of these individuals. After this time Norman moved to Norway, where he was able to enjoy four generations under one house, sharing his love for sports, music, humor and gardening with his daughter, Jo-Ellen, son-in-law, Michael, granddaughter, Amber and great-grandson, Rowan.
Norman is survived by his son, John M. Brawn; his daughter, Jo-Ellen Carter and her husband, Michael; granddaughter, Amber Carter; great-grandson, Rowan; brother-in-law, Dr. Richard Berry and wife, June; and many nephews and nieces.
Norman was predeceased by his parents, John and Doris Brawn; his in-laws, John and Mildred Berry; and his beloved wife, Jean.
A heart-felt thank-you to the Maine Veterans’ Home, for their compassionate, loving care during his stay. Your warmth and tenderness made each moment peaceful.
