Michael M. Cushing, Sr., 68
WESTBROOK – Michael M. Cushing, Sr., 68, died on Sept. 3, 2015 at the Gosnell Memorial Hospice House in Scarborough. He was born in Everett, Mass. on Sept. 30, 1946, the son of Malcolm Cushing and Marion (Owens) Cohen.
Michael grew up in the Pembroke/Perry area on his father’s farm. After graduating from Shead Memorial High School, he attended Maine Maritime Academy where he earned a degree in Marine Engineering and received his Naval Commission. After graduation, Michael worked for the Gulf Oil Company where he started as a Third Assistant Engineer Unlimited. In 1977, he began teaching Marine Engineering at what was then SMVTI, now SMCC. He taught for over 21 years. While teaching, he also owned and operated his own body shop. He then went on to work for Barber Foods as a Facilities Manager, until his retirement in 2013. Michael was a spiritual, clever, caring, and witty man who enjoyed vegetable gardening, reading his Bible, spending time on the water and spending time with his family. He was an incredibly loving Husband, Dad, and Papa.
Michael is survived by his wife Jean (Townsend) Cushing; and his sons, Michael Cushing, Jr. and his wife Michele of Gorham, and Stephen Cushing of Westbrook; four granddaughters, Meghan, Morgan, Courtney, and Kaitlyn Cushing; six siblings, Martha and Red McIntyre, Mack and Norma Cushing, Marilyn and Michael Whelpley, Michele and Richard Critchley, Marsha and Kenneth Morse, and Martin and Maureen Cushing, two sister-in-laws, Mary and Shirl Bishop and Helen and Pete Galipeau; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his father Malcolm, and mother and step-father, Marion and Wolfe Cohen.
A graveside service will be held Sept. 11, 2015 at 11 a.m. at Brooklawn Memorial Park, 2002 Congress St., Portland. Arrangements by the Dolby Funeral Chapel, Windham. Condolences to the family may be expressed at www.dolbyfuneralchapels.com
