Michael J. Joyce ’78

INVERNESS, Fla. – Michael Joseph Joyce, 62, of Inverness Fla,. passed away on Aug. 10, 2017, after a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer, surrounded by his loving wife Dian and family.

Michael was born on Oct.15, 1954, in Portland. He was the son of the late Martin John Joyce II, former business agent for the Plumbers and Pipefitters Union; and the late Theresa (Tessie Nappi) Joyce.

Michael graduated from Portland High School in 1973. He went on to study marine engineering at Maine Maritime Academy and graduated with the class of 1978.

On July 24, 1976, he married the love of his life, Dian Elizabeth Mackie. Michael was a member of the Marine Engineer’s Beneficial Association (M.E.B.A.) union. He sailed for Farrell Lines, and Maersk Lines for 32 years, spending the last 18 years as chief engineer.

After retiring in 2012, Michael and his wife Dian opened Joyce’s Courtside Pub in Inverness, Florida.

Michael is survived by his wife Dian; and their four sons, Michael Joseph Joyce II and his wife Amy of Inverness, Fla., Mark Jeffrey Joyce and his wife Nicole of Scarborough, Matthew John Joyce and his wife Amanda of Cumberland, William Martin and his girlfriend Keri Larson of Cape Elizabeth; grandson Tyler Michael Joyce who brings happiness wherever he goes. Michael is also survived by his brother Martin John Joyce III and his wife Barbara of Scarborough; his sister Carol Ann Amero and her husband Stephen; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 4-8 p.m., Tuesday Aug. 15, 2017, at A.T. Hutchins, 660 Brighton Avenue, Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday Aug. 16, 2017, at 10 a.m. at St Peter’s Church, 72 Federal Street, Portland. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, South Portland.
