PORTLAND – Mark Joseph Hellen, 63, the best man known to mankind, departed this world on Friday, July 17, 2015, while away on business in Manchester, N.H. Mark was born on May 10, 1952, the son of Eleanor Johnson Hellen and Robert “Yogi” Hellen. He graduated from Portland High School in 1971 but found his true passion while attending Maine Maritime Academy. He was a graduate of the class of 1975 with a Bachelor’s Degree in marine engineering. He sailed for all his licenses and achieved a chief engineer license.

Mark was actively involved in his children’s lives and spent years volunteering for all of their school activities and was a true advocate and supporter for all children. EVERYONE was always welcomed at the House of Hellen. He found true happiness with family life and always knew how to put a positive spin on everything. He will always be remembered for his boisterous laugh and infectious smile. His warm and caring personality would literally light up a room. You didn’t truly know what a hug was until you received a warm embrace from Mark.
