Mark J. Hellen ’75

PORTLAND – Mark Joseph Hellen, 63, the best man known to mankind, departed this world on Friday, July 17, 2015, while away on business in Manchester, N.H. Mark was born on May 10, 1952, the son of Eleanor Johnson Hellen and Robert “Yogi” Hellen. He graduated from Portland High School in 1971 but found his true passion while attending Maine Maritime Academy. He was a graduate of the class of 1975 with a Bachelor’s Degree in marine engineering. He sailed for all his licenses and achieved a chief engineer license.

While having a successful career as chief engineer, Mark made the decision to be closer to his family and opened his own family business named “Warm at Last” which he ran with his wife Karen for eight years. The business sold monitor heaters for residential and commercial use. He then became the energy service manager for Nelson & Small and in his most recent years he was the sales & service manager for Webber Supply. He is widely known for his tremendous knowledge of energy systems and as an industry expert this new form of heating systems. Mark was always available to provide assistance, troubleshoot, and impart reliable advice to anyone over the phone. There was no job too big or too small.
In between all his successes, he had four children, Nathan Joseph, Claire Elaine, Nicholas Robert and Nolan Ryan, which he would claim to be his greatest accomplishments. Mark was actively involved in his children’s lives and spent years volunteering for all of their school activities and was a true advocate and supporter for all children. EVERYONE was always welcomed at the House of Hellen. He found true happiness with family life and always knew how to put a positive spin on everything. He will always be remembered for his boisterous laugh and infectious smile. His warm and caring personality would literally light up a room. You didn’t truly know what a hug was until you received a warm embrace from Mark.
Mark is survived by his beloved wife Karen; and his four children Nathan Joseph Hellen (Amy), Claire Elaine Berntsen (Brandon), Nicholas Robert Hellen (Ernia) and their son Jameson, Nolan Ryan Hellen; and his sister Margaret Sylvester (Paul). He is also survived by his aunt Mary Pellegrino; and numerous nieces, nephews; and cousins. Predeceased are his parents, Eleanor Johnson Hellen and Robert “Yogi” Hellen.
