John “Mike” Whelan ’46
WHELAN, JOHN, M., “MIKE” 87, of President Avenue, Riverside, died peacefully surrounded by his loving family on October 25, 2013 at the Tockwotton Home. He was the beloved husband of Linda (Cornish) Whelan. Born in Biddeford, ME, a son of the late Harry and Cecelia (Cleary) Whelan, he lived in Riverside for 58 years. Mike was employed at the FM Global Insurance Co. for 40 years retiring as Vice President in 1991. Mike was a 25 year U.S. Navy Veteran retiring as a full Commander. He was a graduate of Biddeford High School, Maine Maritime Academy and Wentworth Institute. He was a member of the West Barrington Men’s Club and ASME. A sports enthusiast he enjoyed football, basketball and golfing. Besides his wife of 60 years, he is survived by two sons; John J. “Jack” Whelan and his wife Marie of Riverside and Andrew C. Whelan of Windham, ME, two grandchildren; Kristen L. Whelan and Craig M. Whelan and his faithful dog, “Dinah.” He was the brother of the late Peg LaFond. His funeral service will be held on Wednesday October 30 in the W. RAYMOND WATSON FUNERAL HOME, 350 Willett Avenue, Riverside at 11 am. Calling hours are Tuesday 5-8 pm.
