John L. Brophy ’47
CASTINE – Captain John Lawry Brophy, 88, took the late jitney to Fiddler’s Green on February 12, 2016. He was born June 29, 1927, in Skowhegan, the son of Henry L. and Rebecca A. (Lawry) Brophy.
John graduated from Lawrence High School in 1944 and the Maine Maritime Academy 1947D. After graduating from the Academy he worked with US Lines from 1947-1967, then moved to Panama and was a Canal Pilot from 1967-1988. John was a member of the Boston Marine Society and the Harness Racing Association. He was a 32nd degree Mason, a member of the Abou Saad Temple, in Panama, Royal Order of Jesters and a 50-year member of the Siloam Lodge of Fairfield. John was an avid golfer and Patriots fan. And while we mourn him, he continues to mourn the Patriot’s playoff defeat.
John is survived by his wife of 44 years, Dona Maria Jones Brophy; 5 children, Susan Gale, Christopher Brophy, Hannah Green, Andrea McDonnell and Charlene Commerford; 9 grandchildren; and a faithful dachshund, Chief.
