Francis W. Mayo ’54

Francis W. “Frank” Mayo, 86, of Turner, Maine, died Dec. 19, 2017 at the Maine Veterans Home in South Paris.

He was born on Apr. 21, 1931, in Lewiston, a son of Walter and Bernice (St. Thomas) Mayo. He attended Sanford Springvale schools and went on to graduate from Maine Maritime Academy with a degree in Marine Engineering.

In the mid-1950’s he married, Barbara Records. She died on Dec. 9, 1995.

A veteran of the US Navy, Frank served four years and had been stationed in Vallejo, Concord and then after his discharge he worked for Pacific Gas & Electric. He moved his family to Eureka, CA. and began working as an insurance inspector for Hartford Steam Boiler.

In 1972; he and Barbara accomplished their goal of returning to Maine; the state they both loved and originated from. Francis re-took the Coast Guard exam and got back to what he earned his degree in, taking a job with Interlake Steamship Company as an engineer in their shipping business on the Great Lakes, retiring in 1990.

He was a member of the AMVETS in Buckfield, Modern Woodmen of the World, Knights of Columbus and enjoyed staying busy in retirement helping his wife in her ceramic business until she passed. Francis married Virginia Buck and they enjoyed travelling and visiting casinos until her passing in 2010.

Frank is survived by his children, Andrea Mayo-Strickland of Turner, Michael D. Mayo of Turner, Donna Storer of Jay, and James W. Mayo of Turner; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his wives; siblings, Patricia Bland and Donald Mayo.
