Emery C. Daly ’53

Surrounded by members of his family, Emery Cambridge Daly, 84, passed away peacefully on January 11, 2018, at Manchester Memorial Hospital in Manchester, CT. Emery was born on January 30, 1933, in Lynnfield Center, MA, the son of Raymond Christy and Dorothea Shay Daly.

Emery, raised in Hudson, NH, graduated from Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, ME, with a Bachelor of Marine Science degree in 1953. He served in the US Navy on the USS Boxer as a marine engineer during the Korean War. Following his honorable discharge from the Navy he worked for the United Fruit Company as a merchant marine for a few years. Emery continued his studies receiving a Mechanical Engineering degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1962. He retired from Pratt and Whitney based in East Harford, CT, after 30 years working on and improving jet engines.

In his spare time Emery enjoyed working with electronics and built computers from scratch in the mid-1970s. He served on the East Hartford Board of Education and became a Life Master of Bridge which he enjoyed playing throughout most of his life. He was Master of Charter Oak Lodge #58 in Effingham, NH, of the Free and Accepted Order of Masons. With a passionate interest in genealogy he created a website under the domain name DalyClan.org. The site remains active and contains much useful information about the Daly family and numerous other family trees.

Emery was married three times beginning with Nancy Taylor in Effingham, NH, in 1961 with whom he had two sons, Stephen and Paul Daly. The third time was definitely the charm when he married Roberta Maselek in Tolland, CT, in 2001. Roberta’s four children, Kristen, Brendon, Justin and Tyler had a strong relationship with Emery; his generosity and infectious sense of humor will be deeply missed.

Emery is survived by his wife of seventeen years Roberta, his children Stephen Daly of Springfield, MA, Paul Daly and his wife Shannon of Denver, CO, Kristen Maselek of Springfield, MA, Brendon Maselek and his wife Corey of Coventry, CT, Justin Maselek of Hebron, CT, Tyler Maselek of Enfield, CT, two brothers Howard Daly of NY and Allen Crabtree of ME, and five grandchildren, McKenna and Jameson Daly, and Arianna, Jackson and Greyson Maselek. He is predeceased by his father Raymond Christy Daly and his mother Dorothea Shay Daly Crabtree, as well as his step father Allen Frederick Crabtree Jr. Emery also had a very loving dog Emmie and cat Marmalade of which he grew very attached over the years.
