Edgar S. Catlin ’47

Edgar S. Catlin Jr., 82, of Mere Point Road, died May 14, 2010 at his home.

“Tim” was born in Portland on June 28, 1927, the son of Edgar S. and Helen Merryman Catlin Sr.

He graduated from Governor Dummer Academy in 1945, Maine Maritime Academy in 1947 and Bowdoin College in 1950. He served as a Lt./gunnery officer on board the U.S.S. Hollis during the Korean Conflict.

Tim was employed by Central Maine Power Company and the Portland Press Herald. He was Superintendent of the pulp mill for Pejepscot Paper Company. An avid philatelist in the 1960s, he owned and operated Visa-Tray, a stamp collection company. As President of Abel Realty Co., he purchased the Brunswick train station property and developed one of Brunswick’s first shopping centers, which included Cottle’s, Maine Hardware, Maine National Bank and the Maine Liquor Store. He was a former member of the Brunswick Zoning Board. He was a member of American Legion Post 202 in Topsham.

Tim was a devoted single parent to his five children and adored his five grandchildren.

He is survived by two daughters, Major Deirdre Catlin of Spokane, WA; Shelagh Catlin Dorn and her husband Stephen of Albany, NY; three sons, Edgar Catlin III of Brunswick; Daniel Catlin and his love, Amy Alexander of Brunswick; Peter Catlin and his wife Adrianna Crooker Catlin of Derry, NH; grandchildren Andrew Catlin, James Catlin, Elizabeth Catlin, Daniel Catlin Jr., Hannah Dorn, and Brody Catlin; and his faithful dogs, Boomer and Cocoa.

The family deeply appreciates the kindness and attention given to Tim by his dedicated caregivers during the past four years.
