Donald W. O’Brien ’56
WILTON, NY – Donald W. “OB” O’Brien, 82, of Woodlake Dr., passed away Monday morning, January 1, 2018 at his home. Born on April 4, 1935 in Bingham, Maine, he was the son of the late Rodney and Louise (Cunningham) O’Brien.
He was a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy and entered the United States Navy as an Officer. He shipped Merchant Marine, and served aboard the USS Kidd and USS Till as Lieutenant Commander. He served as a Naval Intelligence Officer during the Vietnam War. He later taught Math and Science at the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.
Following OB’s honorable discharge from the Navy, he was employed for over 30 years in International Marketing for General Electric, traveling all over the world selling gas and steam turbines.
Following his “retirement” he did consulting work for the Japanese firm, Mitsui. OB was an avid golfer and a member of MacGregor Country Club.
He was predeceased by his parents; a sister, Norma Foster and a brother, Nicholas O’Brien. Survivors include his loving wife, Claudia O’Brien; four children, Kathleen (John) Boggs of New Market, MD, Diane (Glenn) Barnes of Stillwater, Donald O’Brien II of Morrisville, PA, daughter-in-law, Rita O’Brien, Donna (Vincent) Salmiery of Martinsburg, VA; three step-children, Darin (Jamie) Parish of Wilton, Jeffrey(Jill) Parish of Greenfield, Brittanie Parish-Carlson of Wilton; one brother, George (Marilyn) O’Brien of Rochester, NH; four grandchildren, Ashley, Brett, Sean and Michael; five step grandchildren, Darien, Landon, Kaileigh, Jay and Trevor; two great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
In keeping with OB’s wishes, funeral services are private and at the convenience of the family.In lieu of flowers, contributions in OB’s memory may be directed to American Cancer Society and The Make A Wish Foundation.
