Charles A. Kilby ’49
NEWPORT, MAINE – Charles Alden Kilby, 89, died on January 10, 2018. He was born on October 13, 1928, in South Portland, a son of Henry and Irene (Hannaford) Kilby. He graduated from the Maine Maritime Academy, Class of 1949, and served in the Merchant Marines including oil tankers to Saudi Arabia. After moving to Caribou he met Lizzie. They were married for nearly 60 years. He operated power plants for Maine Public Service Company for 40 years. He and Lizzie moved to Newport after retiring. Charles was a member of the Lions Club for many years. Charlie enjoyed spending time at their camp on Cross Lake. Every summer his family would gather together at the camp making unforgettable memories.
Charlie was a wonderful father who always put his family first. His family meant the world to him and he meant the world to his family. He will be greatly missed.
He is survived by two sons, Gary and wife, Carlene, of Palm Beach Gardens, FL, Jerry and wife, Lesia, of Frankfort, Kentucky; a daughter, Betty and husband, Peter Stone, of Enfield; a sister, Shirley Richardson of New Hampshire; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was also a special step-grampy to Sarah, Adam, Aubri, Bryson, Jennifer and Margaret.
He was predeceased by his wife, Elizabeth (Cody) on January 3, 2010.
There will be no visitation. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, January 16th, 2018, at Crosby & Neal, 117 Main Street, Newport. Spring burial will be in the Fairmount Cemetery, Presque Isle. Donations in Charlie’s memory may be made to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 15829, Arlington, VA 22215.
