Course Duration

This is an 8 to 10-hour, fully online course.

Once you complete the course, our system will automatically notify the instructor. They will review your coursework to ensure all components have been completed satisfactorily.

Certification will be issued upon successful completion and approval. A digital certificate will be emailed to you, and a hard copy will be sent via USPS.


Course Description

This course is designed for already qualified seafarers who need instruction and training in competency assessment techniques, along with guidance on effective assessment methods and best practices.

Participants enrolling in this course should already possess the appropriate knowledge, understanding, and proficiency (KUP) related to the competencies they will be assessing in others.

Upon successful completion, participants will be able to:

  • Apply international and national requirements for the training and assessment of officers and ratings aboard merchant vessels and platforms

  • Determine and verify effective assessment procedures and methods

  • Organize and conduct assessments for individuals requiring competency evaluation


Course Access & Online Learning

Upon registration, students will receive a confirmation email with login details for Canvas, Maine Maritime Academy’s online learning platform.

  • The course is self-paced.

  • Modules must be completed in sequence, with a quiz following each module.

  • Please allow up to 2 hours for the course to appear on your Canvas dashboard after registration.

Returning students can log in using their existing Canvas credentials.

MMA alumni who previously used Canvas as undergraduates will receive a new Canvas account for their CPMD courses.


Retake Policy

Students who do not pass the exam on the first attempt may retake it.


USCG Approval

This course meets the training requirements outlined in 46 CFR 10.405(a)(1) and 10.405(d), as well as STCW Code Section A-I/6, paragraphs 3 and 6. All assessments must be signed by a qualified assessor approved by the Coast Guard in accordance with 46 CFR 10.405.

It also fulfills the Qualified Assessor fundamentals requirement as outlined in USCG NVIC 19-14.
