Course Description

This course provides a fundamental understanding of the shipboard systems involved in the design and safe operation of inert gas and crude oil washing (IGS/COW) systems aboard tankers.

Students will be introduced to the science, design, and safety features of IGS/COW systems based on SOLAS Regulation 62 and FFS Chapter 15 guidelines. The course covers the discipline, mechanics, operational procedures, and regulations applicable to these systems, along with the locations and functions of system components.

Training includes hands-on simulation using the Transas Dangerous Liquid Cargo Simulator and the OSG 350 Tanker Simulator. By the end of the course, students will be able to successfully operate, maintain, and inspect IGS/COW systems.

USCG Approval

Applicants who complete this course will satisfy the crude oil washing operations training requirement of 33 CFR 157.152(c)(2).
