Prerequisite: Basic Polar Code Operations
16-hour online coursework followed by a three day (24 hour) on campus assessment.
Course Description
This course is a blended learning course consisting of a 40-hours curriculum for mariners who are employed, or may be employed, on vessels transiting the Polar Regions and meets the mandatory training requirements in Chapter 12 of the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code); and the supporting amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978, as amended (STCW) and the Seafarers’ Training, Certification and Watchkeeping (STCW) Code.as required by the Polar Code /STCW 2010.After 16-hours of online coursework, students will spend three days on campus participating in classroom discussions, simulator use and assessment, and a final written examination. Upon successfully completing the 3-day final assessment, certification will be issued.
Course Access
Upon registration students will receive a confirmation email with details on how to access the online coursework. You may complete the training at your own pace but may be required to finish one module before advancing to the next. Please allow 24 hours for the enrollment and activation process to be completed.
Once the online modules are completed you will register for your final assessment. Completion of the online modules is a prerequisite for attending the assessment day; however, you may register to take the assessment at any point after starting the course. If our schedule does not work for you, give us a call. We can often support alternative dates, pending instructor availability and timing.

Maine Maritime Academy uses Canvas as its online learning management system. If you have previously taken online classes with MMA, log in with your existing username and password after registering, and the new class will appear on your dashboard.
New enrollees should allow up to 2 hours for the course to appear on their dashboard.
USCG Approval
This course meets the Certification requirements for Basic Training in Polar Waters STCW table A-V/4-1. By successfully completing this course the candidate will have met the minimum knowledge, understanding and proficiency listed in column 2 of table A-V/4-1 and the required standards of competence in accordance with the methods for demonstrating competence and the criteria for evaluating competence tabulated in column 3 and 4 of table A-V4-1.
