Course Details
Prerequisite: Basic Polar Code Operations

This blended learning course includes:

  • 16 hours of self-paced online coursework.
  • A 3-day (24-hour) on-campus assessment, including classroom discussions, simulator exercises, and a final written exam.

Upon successful completion of the on-campus assessment, certification will be issued.


Course Description
This 40-hour course is designed for mariners working or planning to work on vessels operating in Polar Regions. The course meets the mandatory training requirements of:

  • Chapter 12 of the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code).
  • Supporting amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 (STCW).

The program ensures participants gain the knowledge, understanding, and proficiency outlined in the Polar Code/STCW standards.


Course Access
Upon registration, students will receive a confirmation email with instructions to access the online coursework. Key details include:

  • Training is self-paced but requires completion of one module before advancing.
  • Allow 24 hours for course enrollment and activation.
  • Completion of online modules is required before attending the final on-campus assessment.

Scheduling the Final Assessment:

  • Register for the assessment during course registration or whenever you’re ready.
  • If the provided schedule doesn’t work, contact us to discuss alternative dates.

Learning Platform: Canvas
Maine Maritime Academy uses Canvas as its online learning management system.

  • Returning students can log in with existing credentials, and the new course will appear on their dashboard after registration.
  • New students should allow up to 2 hours for the course to appear on their dashboard.

USCG Approval
This course meets the Basic Training in Polar Waters (STCW Table A-V/4-1) requirements. Upon completion, students will meet the knowledge, proficiency, and competency standards outlined in Columns 2, 3, and 4 of Table A-V/4-1.
