Course Duration
This is a 40-hour hybrid course, consisting of:
- 32 hours of self-paced online coursework
- Followed by an 8-hour on-campus assessment held at MMA’s Castine campus using the full mission bridge simulator
Certification will be issued upon successful completion of the on-campus assessment.
Course Description
Prerequisite: Basic Polar Code Operations
This course is designed for mariners working or planning to work on vessels operating in Polar Regions. The course meets the mandatory training requirements of:
- Chapter 12 of the International Code for Ships Operating in Polar Waters (Polar Code).
- Supporting amendments to the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping for Seafarers, 1978 (STCW).
The program ensures participants gain the knowledge, understanding, and proficiency outlined in the Polar Code/STCW standards.

Retake Policy
Students who do not pass the exam on the first attempt may retake it.
USCG Approval
This course meets the Basic Training in Polar Waters (STCW Table A-V/4-1) requirements. Upon completion, students will meet the knowledge, proficiency, and competency standards outlined in Columns 2, 3, and 4 of Table A-V/4-1.
