Course Overview
Course Length: 40 hours on campus
Course Description
This course meets the standards of competence required for Chief Mates and Masters as outlined in Part A of the STCW Code (as amended in 1995). It focuses on the Meteorology and Oceanographic Science competencies specified under the Navigation at the Management Level requirements of the STCW Code.
Participants will gain advanced knowledge in:
- Meteorology
- Weather forecasting
- Ocean science
- Weather routing
These critical skills are essential for mariners serving at the management level, such as Chief Mates and Masters.
Prerequisites
This course is designed for Chief Mates and Masters. Participants are expected to have:
- Completed Basic Meteorology
- A solid understanding of marine meteorology fundamentals as outlined in IMO Model Course 7.03 or equivalent training provided by maritime academies or professional training providers.
U.S. Coast Guard Approval
Applicants who successfully complete the Advanced Meteorology (MEMACE-18) course will satisfy the following requirements:
Advanced Meteorology Training Requirements
- 46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(iii) and 11.307(a)(3)(iii) for STCW endorsements as Master or Chief Mate on vessels of 3,000 GT or more.
- 46 CFR 11.311(a)(3)(iii) and 11.313(a)(3)(iii) for STCW endorsements as Master or Chief Mate on vessels of more than 500 GT and less than 3,000 GT.
Equivalent Practical Assessments
The practical assessments completed during this course are recognized as equivalent to the National Assessment Guidelines for STCW Code (2010 amendments), Table A-II/2. These include competencies as documented in NVICs 10-14 and 11-14:
