Course Length: 40 hours on campus
Course Description
This Chief Mate-Master course provides an in-depth understanding of watchkeeping arrangements and procedures, international regulations, collision avoidance, traffic separation schemes, bridge resource management, and communication skills for deck officers at the management level.
The course focuses on Bridge Resource Management and Watchkeeping at the management level, ensuring participants are prepared to undertake senior watchkeeping duties, contributing to the safe passage of their vessels, passengers, crew, and cargo.
The course satisfies the international regulations outlined in the Manila Amendments to the STCW Code, specifically for competence in the following areas:
Function: Navigation at the Management Level
Competence: Establish Watchkeeping Arrangements and Procedures
Knowledge, Understanding, and Proficiency:
- Understanding international regulations for preventing collisions at sea
- Applying relevant Standards for Training and Certification of Watchstanders
- Understanding procedures and principles for keeping a navigational watch
- Using VDR, LRIT, BNWAS, AIS, ECDIS, and related bridge equipment
- Utilizing strategies and skills in Interpersonal Communication
Competence: Maintain Safe Navigation Using Information from Navigation Equipment and Systems
Knowledge, Understanding, and Proficiency:
- Appreciation of system errors and operational aspects of navigational systems
- Blind pilotage planning
- Evaluation of navigational information from radar, ARPA, and other sources for collision avoidance and safe navigation
- Optimizing use of all navigational data
USCG Approval
Those who successfully complete our Advanced Watchkeeping (MEMACE-27) course will satisfy the training requirements of 46 CFR 11.305(a)(2), 11.307(a)(2), 11.311(a)(2), and 11.313(a)(2); AND the Advanced Watchkeeping and Advanced COLREGS training requirements of STCW Code Section A-II/2 and Table A-II/2, as amended 2010, for certification as Master or Chief Mate on vessels of 500 GT or more;
AND the Advanced Watchkeeping standards of competence required by STCW Code Section A-II/2 and Table A-II/2, as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVICs 10-14(Ch-2), 11-14(Ch-2), and 03-18 Tasks 5.1, 5.2.A, and 5.3.A.
