Course Duration

This is an 80-hour hybrid course, consisting of:

  • 40 hours of self-paced online coursework
  • Followed by a 40-hour on-campus assessment held at MMA’s Castine campus using the full mission bridge simulator

Certification will be issued upon successful completion of the on-campus assessment.

 

Course Description

The Chief Mate to Master course provides students with practical theory and comprehensive understanding of ship handling in a variety of maneuvering situations encountered during vessel navigation.

Students will apply online instruction and lecture materials to practical simulator exercises designed to meet the Management Level Advanced Ship Handling assessments as outlined in:

  • STCW Table A-II/2: Minimum Standard of Competence for Masters and Chief Mates on Ships of 500 GT or More
  • NVIC 10-14: Record of Assessment
  • NVIC 11-14: Navigation and Vessel Inspection Circular

This training ensures students achieve the necessary competencies to be certified as functional navigators at the management level.

  • Respond to navigational emergencies
  • Maneuver and handle a ship in all conditions

Knowledge, Understanding, and Proficiency Topics

  • Beaching a ship
  • Grounding and refloating a grounded ship
  • Action to take if collision is imminent
  • Damage control, emergency towing, and steering
  • Shallow water effects, anchoring, and dragging anchor

Ship Maneuvering and Handling Scenarios

  • Approaching pilot stations and embarking a pilot
  • Maneuvering in restricted waters and shallow water
  • Docking, undocking, and tug interaction
  • Use of propulsion and maneuvering systems
  • Dry-docking with or without damage
  • Handling ships in heavy weather or near ice
  • Operating in traffic separation schemes and VTS areas
  • Launching rescue boats or survival craft and assisting survivors

Course Access & Online Learning

Upon registration, students will receive a confirmation email with login details for Canvas, Maine Maritime Academy’s online learning platform.

  • The course is self-paced

  • Modules must be completed sequentially with a quiz after each

  • Allow up to 2 hours for the course to appear on your dashboard after registering

Returning students can log in using their existing Canvas credentials.

Maine Maritime Academy alumni who previously used Canvas as undergraduates will receive a new Canvas account for their CPMD courses.

Retake Policy

Students who do not pass the exam on the first attempt may retake it.

USCG Approval

Those who successfully complete this Advanced Shiphandling (MEMACE-22) course will satisfy the training requirements detailed in the following regulatory codes and standards:

46 CFR 11.305(a)(3)(i) endorsement as master and 11.307(a)(3)(i) for STCW endorsements as chief mate on vessels of 3,000 GT or more and
46 CFR 11.311(a)(3)(i) endorsement as master and 11.313(a)(3)(i) endorsement as chief mate for STCW Code, as amended 2010, on vessels of more than 500 GT and less than 3,000 GT.

In addition, students will also achieve the advanced ship handling standards of competence required by

46 CFR 11.305(a)(2), 11.307(a)(2), 11.311(a)(2), 11.313(a)(2), and 11.315(a)(2);
STCW Code Section A-II/2 and Tables A-II/2 as amended 2010, meeting the National Assessment Guidelines from NVIC 10-14 (Ch-2) Tasks, as documented in NVICs 10-14 (Ch-2) and 11-14 (Ch-2):
